Lifehacker, via BookBaby, thinks everyone should read these books, which are mostly novels and mostly excellent choices.

Started, didn’t finish (TLDR)

Remembrance of Things Past (in French), The Fountainhead, Moby-Dick, War and Peace, Crime and Punishment, Ulysses

Have Not Read

Atonement, Life of Pi, Midnight’s Children, The Road, Middlesex, Disgrace, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Underworld, The Kite Runner, The Remains of the Day, The Handmaid’s Tale, Scoop, His Dark Materials, The Leopard, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Blood Meridian, Twilight, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Crash, A Confederacy of Dunces, Foundation, Possession, Cold Comfort Farm, Memoirs of a Geisha, Atlas Shrugged, Don Quixote, Finder’s Game, The Tin Drum, The Brothers Karamazov, The Grapes of Wrath, Oscar and Lucinda, Lonesome Dove, The Time Traveler’s Wife.

I can see my reading has skewed toward nineteenth and early to mid-twentieth century and has fallen off since. At least the “read” list is longer than the others.
